Oklahoma Court Records
The Oklahoma courts website is designed to help simplify the state’s judicial system so that individuals can understand how the judiciary works in the Sooner State. Unlike most jurisdictions, Oklahoma practices a multi-level judiciary with a unique dual (bifurcated) appellate system in addition to trial courts.
The Oklahoma Supreme Court has final authority over civil appeals, while the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals is the apex court for criminal cases. At the lower level, the District Courts and the Municipal Courts are the primary trial courts. However, District Courts have general jurisdiction over civil and criminal trials, but oversee cases beyond the authority of the Municipal Courts. Oklahoma also operates Workers' Compensation Courts of Existing Claims, Courts of Tax Review, and Tribal Courts with limited jurisdiction over workers' claims, tax-related trials, and civil cases.
The Oklahoma Open Records Act grants public access to court records to ensure accountability, transparency, and public oversight of the state’s judiciary. However, this access excludes juvenile records and documents protected by statutory laws and judicial orders. While the Oklahoma court records website provides information about legal proceedings in the state’s courts, it does not have any official affiliations with government agencies or provide legal advice.
